THIS EVENT WAS ORGANIZED IN JUST OVER 72 HOURS.
This grassroots effort began after a Bay Area lawyer, Adam S. Juratovac (@AdamJTheLawyer), had lunch with his mother. His mother told him she was afraid of going grocery shopping after dark because of the rise in violent, racist attacks on Asian-American elders. Later that evening, Juratovac learned about the violent, racist, and sexist attacks in Atlanta, GA.
After learning about Atlanta, Juratovac took to the social media platform, TikTok, and created a six-part video series (See links to videos below) about his experiences with his mother. Juratovac foreshadowed a call-to-action to the AAPI community.
The next day, Juratovac began preparing what he calls, “Hype Videos,” inviting community members to the #StopAsianHate Community Rally. He began live-streaming himself creating the Hype Video to around 50-60 TikTok-ers on TikTok Live. Shortly after he began streaming, TikTok-ers on his live stream began volunteering to complete tasks and help organize the community rally. The organization and operations of this event was a pure grassroots effort, with a lot of sweat equity provided by allies of the AAPI Community.
REP. MIKE HONDA WAS RECRUITED TO SPEAK AT THE EVENT THANKS TO JURATOVAC’S TIKTOK COMMUNITY
The #StopAsianHate Community Rally speakers lineup included speakers from many backgrounds (See speakers list below). The lineup concluded with 17-year Veteran of the United States Congress, Rep. Mike Honda. Honda became aware of the community rally after one of Juratovac’s TikTok followers, and family friend to Honda viewed Juratovac’s Wednesday (3/17/21) TikTok live stream calling for community action.
Juratovac’s TikTok follower connected Honda and Juratovac. At Sunday’s Community Rally, Juratovac introduced Rep. Mike Honda as “The OG of the AAPI community in the Bay Area.” The acronym OG means, Original Gangster.
After the event, Honda told Juratovac, “No one has generated more of a crowd than you and your team.”
EVERYONE WORE A MASK BUT SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES WERE NOT FOLLOWED
The energy at San Jose City Hall was electric. #StopAsianHate Community Rally attendees did not follow social distancing guidelines as they exercised their right of freedom of speech, and the right to peaceably assemble. Attendees filled the second floor of the Rotunda building, and the stairs leading up to the second floor. Every inch of the hand rails was filled with community members standing shoulder to shoulder. In most places on the second-floor rotunda railing, community members stood two or three people deep.
The ramp located directly behind the stage was jam-packed. Community members stood shoulder to shoulder, and were two to three people deep standing along the ramp rails.
More community members were standing toward ramp side closest to the building for shade. The community members standing in the shady part of the ramp were standing shoulder to shoulder.
THE RALLY CRY OF THE EVENT WAS “ONE BEAT. ONE HEART.”
Throughout the event, Juratovac led the crowd in chanting, “One Beat. One Heart.” Juratovac led that chant: (1) to start the #StopAsianHate Community Rally event; (2) between each speaker; (3) to unify the community; and (4) to close out the rally.
SAFETY AT THE NEXT RALLY
Juratovac and his team contacted the San Jose Police Department on at least three separate occasions requesting police presence at the Community Rally. Eventually, the San Jose Police Department told Juratovac to call the non-emergency hotline a couple hours before the event alerting them that over 1,000 signed up to attend the event. Juratovac called the San Jose Police Department four-hours before the event and alerted them that over 1,000 people had signed up to attend. Juratovac was told to call San Jose Police Department two hours before the event. Two hours before the event, Juratovac called the San Jose Police Department and requested police presence at the Community Rally.
Quotes from the rally Organizer, Adam S. Juratovac:
- “San Jose’s #StopAsianHate Community Rally had over 2,500 participants. After the initial attendance numbers came in around the county, San Jose’s event was the largest of its kind in the United States.”
- “#StopAsianHate Community Rally in San Jose saw more than 1,300 people register for tickets. The 1,300 people registered for the event shows the AAPI Community and allies sign up. The 2,500+ in attendance evidences that we also SHOW UP.”
- We are sick and tired of seeing our elders being victims of racist and cowardly attacks within our community. We will not stand idly by and watch. We will act and we will react.
- The #StopAsianHate Community Rally at San Jose City Hall is just the beginning. This is not a riot, this is an uprising.
- Let it be known, that what happened today in San Jose is not a strike of lightning. It was the beginning of a flood.
- ONE BEAT. ONE HEART.
